Latina women shining in Montreal

International Women's Day is commemorated in March, and Spotlight Montreal has the purpose of making visible five brilliant Latina women who, with their work, talent and perseverance, are generating economic, social and cultural value in Montreal. The solidity of their trajectories, their social involvement and their entrepreneurial spirit inspire migrant women not to give up and achieve their dreams.

Ángela Sierra is a Montrealer of Colombian origin who became a Canadian citizen in 2004.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Journalism from the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, and a degree in Film and Television Studies from the University of Aix-en-Provence in France.

She has worked as a researcher in audiovisual production for public affairs programs in Montreal and Colombia, as well as in event communication and production in France.

Since 2007, she has been the executive director of the LatinArte Foundation, the first showcase for artists of Latin American origin in Montreal.

In October 2012, the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Quebec unveiled her name as a finalist in the Leadership in Action category of the Entrepreneurship Contest. The same year, she was named by the Média Mosaïque agency as a part of the Top 20 personalities of Diversity. In March 2015, Ángela Sierra was appointed as a member of the Intercultural Council of Montreal, where she became one of the vice presidents between 2019 and 2021.

Since 2017, she has also been mobilizing the Latin American community through the Maison des Amériques, the first Latin American meeting point in North America, which focuses on business, cultural and community offers that are close to home and accessible to a wide audience. On July 20th, 2020, Ángela Sierra's name appeared on the WorldRemit list of the most influential Colombians in the Diaspora, which recognizes the successes and contributions made by Colombian migrants from around the world to the communities in their countries of origin.

Finally, in December 2021, the Asociación de Estudiantes Javerianos de Canadá, JAVCA, awarded Ángela Sierra a lifetime achievement award for her leadership as a Latin American woman in Quebec. Currently, Ángela Sierra is one of the 21 members of the Board of Directors of the Conseil des Arts de Montréal. She is also the president of Montreal's Latin American Heritage Month.
